Yakima United name Dennis Stevenson new EPLWA Men’s Head Coach

Evergreen Premier League

YAKIMA, WA— It will be a brand new era of sorts for the Hoppers in 2018. Yakima United of the Evergreen Premier League today reveals that the only coach the club has ever known is stepping down. Club President Hector Vega will remain with YUFC and serve in other capacities and Dennis Stevenson will become the new Head Coach of the Men’s side.

“Obviously I’m biased but Hector has been a great coach for us and this club wouldn’t exist without him, period. He was the right guy at the right time,” says Hoppers General Manager Josh Vega. Not that Hector is going all that far. “Of course he’s still the big man in charge, and will be around as much as ever— but we are all very excited to see what Dennis can bring to the table.”

Wenatchee Woes Continue for Hoppers

Wenatchee, WA – Yakima United FC have faced Wenatchee FC in EPLWA league play three times in the past year, to date it has lost all three of those matches. The most recent being last night at Wenatchee Valley Community College. Under stormy skies that would end up serving as a fitting analogy for Yakima’s trails against their Central Washington rivals.

Esquivel Scores 2, but Hoppers can’t hold off Shock

Yakima, WA – It, was a beautiful evening at Marquette Stadium and a stunning occasion. With over 600 fans in attendance on the day amidst a showcase of high quality soccer hosted by Yakima United. The day started off with the Central Washington Soccer Academy U-14 boys hosting the Sounders Academy, and The Sounders Women battling to a 2-2 draw against Central Washington University. The main event of the evening saw the day’s hosts attempt to become the first home side to collect all three points of the 2015 EPLWA season. As well as be the first team to take points away from Tacoma’s South Sound FC. It looked to be the ending to a perfect day at the conclusion a first half that saw Yakima’s Jesse Esquivel score a double, and the Shock go down a man after Cody Guthrie was sent off in the 38th minute for serious foul play. But it was not to be as South Sound showed why they were title challengers last season and among the favorites to hold the crown in 2015.

Hoppers shutout Bellingham 4-0, claim first win of the season

” I need 11 warriors,” was the cry from Hector Vega as his Yakima United FC huddled in the away locker room at Civic Stadium on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Bellingham.

Yakima’s last visit to Bellingham was a fogetable one, losing 8-2 and setting an unwanted league record for worst defeat and most goals conceded in a single game. A record which coincidently was matched on this very same evening as the Spokane Shadow pummeled Wenatchee FC on their own pitch to the same scoreline.

“Who’s more United?” Bellingham Preview

Yakima – In the 2014 Evergreen Premier League season, no fixture saw more goals than when Yakima United, and Bellingham United squared off. In their two meetings a total of 16 goals were scored. That’s equal to about one goal in every 8 minutes of play. This Sunday both the Hoppers and Hammers will look to rediscover some of that goal scoring form as both teams lost their opening matches of the 2015 season.

For Yakima, who opened their season with a 3-1 defeat at home to Vancouver, coming away from Civic stadium, on Sunday, with anything less than three points is not an option. Jesse Esquivel, Yakima’s second top scorer last season, is looking forward to the challenge. “Bellingham is a fun place to play, their fans are always involved and it makes the game more exciting,” he said, before adding “Our games against Bellingham were like night and day last season, home field was definitely an advantage, it seemed like the roles were reversed.”  The stats back up his statement.  At Civic Stadium last seas, Yakima and Bellingham were even through the early stages of the game. Yakima pulled back to level the score at two before the eventual EPLWA top scorer, Tyler Bjork, ran riot scoring six of Bellingham’s eight on the day, while Yakima couldn’t find a third goal. In the reverse tie, at Marquette Stadium, the Hoppers had their revenge by demolishing the Hammers 6-0.

Bellingham, who finished one place ahead of Yakima in the 2014 season, find themselves the same position as the boys in red, as they too lost their opening match of the season, also at home. 2014 league runners up, South Sound, waltzed into Civic Stadium last Sunday and dismantled their opponent 5-1, scoring all 5 goals in the first half before Bellingham could get off the mark in the 68th minute of the second.

Both teams will be coming into this match desperate not to fall to a 0-2 start, and if their short history indicates anything, it could be quite an entertaining affair.

Yakima @ Bellingham kicks off at 3:00pm at Civic Stadium this Sunday.
